Conservation biology: Genes are not enough
نویسنده
چکیده
A study of correlated genotypic and phenotypic changes over a 2400-year period in a cave population of pocket gophers bolsters the idea that small, isolated populations can not only persist in a fluctuating environment, but may be able to adapt without genetic input from elsewhere.

A graph-theory framework for evaluating landscape connectivity and conservation planning.
Connectivity of habitat patches is thought to be important for movement of genes, individuals, populations, and species over multiple temporal and spatial scales. We used graph theory to characterize multiple aspects of landscape connectivity in a habitat network in the North Carolina Piedmont (U.S.A). We compared this landscape with simulated networks with known topology, resistance to disturb...
متن کاملLandscape planning and conservation biology: systems thinking revisited.
Both conservation biology and landscape planning are fields enriched by their solid grounding in professional practice and the real world. Practicing conservation biologists know that landscape planning processes affect biodiversity on the ground, and practicing landscape planners know that biodiversity issues can decisively influence acceptance of planned change. Such pragmatic recognition, ho...
متن کاملEcological determinants of distribution decline and risk of extinction in moths.
For successful conservation of species it is important to identify traits that predispose species to the risk of extinction. By identifying such traits conservation efforts can be directed toward species that are most at risk of becoming threatened. We used data derived from the literature to determine ecological traits that affect distribution, distribution change, and the risk of extinction i...
متن کاملGene transcriptomic profile in arabidopsis thaliana mediated by radiation-induced bystander effects
Background: The in vivo radiation-induced bystander effects (RIBE) at the developmental, genetic, and epigenetic levels have been well demonstrated using model plant Arabidopsis thaliana (A. thaliana). However, the mechanisms underlying RIBE in plants are not clear, especially lacking a comprehensive knowledge about the genes and biological pathways involved in the RIBE in plants. Materials and...
متن کاملIn silico analysis for determining the deleterious nonsynonymous single nucleotide polymorphisms of BRCA genes
Recent advances in DNA sequencing techniques have led to an increase in the identification of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, but no further information regarding the deleterious probability of many of them is available (Variants of Unknown Significance/VUS). As a result, in the current study, different sequence- and structure-based computation...
